Digitalization of manufacturing and the innovation simulation
The last part of the course covers how digital technologies change manufacturing and innovation, and the lessons from the innovation simulation (Lecture 8, "Breaking News").
Digitalization of manufacturing
Digitalization is transforming manufacturing and operations through connected technologies. This shift is often called Industry 4.0 or the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Internet of Things (IoT)
The IoT connects machines, products and systems through data networks. Benefits: real-time monitoring, better process optimization, improved coordination, new business opportunities and network effects across industries. IoT lets firms collect and analyze operational data continuously.
Servitization
Servitization occurs when manufacturers move from selling products to selling services. Example from the lecture: instead of selling an air compressor, the company provides compressed air as a service, and customers pay for usage rather than ownership. Benefits: stable recurring revenue, stronger customer relationships and greater value creation. IoT makes this possible, because the supplier can monitor usage and performance remotely.
Smart technologies
Smart technologies are key components of Industry 4.0, with four characteristics:
| Characteristic | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Awareness | Sensors monitor products and their environment |
| Intelligence | Algorithms support autonomous decision-making and learning |
| Connectivity | Devices communicate through machine-to-machine (M2M) networks |
| Responsiveness | Systems adapt automatically to changing conditions |
Together these create more flexible and intelligent operations.
Lecture 8: the innovation simulation
Main lesson: innovation management cannot guarantee success. It aims to increase the probability of success by improving idea generation, testing, selection and learning.
Innovation as a statistical process
The simulation shows that innovation performance improves when:
| Lever | Symbol | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| More ideas are generated | n increases | More draws increase the chance of finding a high-quality opportunity |
| Greater diversity | σ increases | Diverse perspectives give a wider range of solutions, including extreme good ones |
| Higher average idea quality | μ increases | Better inputs raise the likelihood of successful outcomes |
The intuition: you only need the best idea to succeed. With more ideas (n), a wider spread (σ) or a higher average (μ), the best idea in the set is likely to be better. This connects to earlier chapters: brainstorming's "go for quantity" raises n, diverse teams raise σ, and domain expertise raises μ. Success is partly random, but firms can improve their odds by managing the process well.
Digitalization and open innovation
Digital technologies have expanded the innovation landscape by lowering barriers to participation, enabling collaboration across networks, supporting crowdsourcing and communities, and increasing access to knowledge. Innovation increasingly happens through open innovation networks, communities, ecosystems and collaborative platforms.
Lessons from the simulation
- Innovation involves uncertainty: success depends on risk, uncertainty, probability and learning.
- Innovation requires testing: innovation processes exist to reduce uncertainty through idea generation, experimentation, customer feedback and evaluation.
- Multiple innovation modes exist: internal R&D, open innovation, crowdsourcing, partnerships and communities, each with different costs and benefits.
- Context matters: decisions are influenced by customers, partners, organizational structure, incentives and leadership.
- AI can support innovation: generating ideas, simulating alternatives, evaluating options and supporting decisions under uncertainty.
Put together, the course follows the innovation funnel: creativity and techniques feed many diverse ideas into the funnel, concept screening selects the best, operations and process design turn them into products and processes, quality and lean approaches improve them continuously, and digital technologies change both how firms operate and how they innovate.
